Back in November of 2009, Quebec Premier Jean Charest unveiled a plan to reduce Quebec’s greenhouse gas emissions by 20% (from 1990 levels) by the year 2020. The most ambitious carbon-cutting strategy in North America, the government announced earlier this year that it will be investing up to $250 million to meet this objective. The success of this important initiative will require significant efforts across many sectors of society. There are many actions we can take on the personal level to cut back on our consumption of greenhouse gases. Our actions can be as simple as choosing to eat more locally produced food and using public transportation. Here are five more actions that we can take to reduce our carbon footprint in La belle province.
Go Electric
The government will be increasing the amount of cash it hands out for those who choose to purchase or lease hybrid or electric vehicles. Beginning in 2012, the government will offer rebates of up to $8,000 on long range electric vehicles. People who opt for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids with lighter batteries will receive smaller rebates.
Go Economical
Even with the rebate, many of us will not be able to afford one of these pricey vehicles. But, we can still do the right thing environmentally speaking by buying an economical and highly fuel efficient vehicle like a Yaris. Another carbon reducing action we can take with a new or older car, is requesting synthetic lubricants the next time it needs servicing. Today’s synthetic lubricants are just as effective as oil-based ones, while increasing fuel efficiency.
Home Renovation- C02 Reduction
When it comes to new construction and renovation look for a Leed Contractor that uses environmentally-friendly construction materials. LEED certification means your construction company is committed to improving the efficiency, the quality of the indoor environment of your home, and to reducing overall CO2 emissions.
Go Solar
If your home is in an area that gets plenty of sunshine, you can also think about investing in a hot air solar system. Sorry, no provincial incentives here, but there are a number of companies available in Quebec to help you out if you choose to go in this direction.
Get the Heater Inspected
Quebec already enjoys some of the cleanest air in Canada thanks to the Province’s widespread use of hydroelectricity. Many homes still rely on residential heating oil. Home owners should ensure that their furnaces are running efficiently and explore with Hydro Quebec or their home oil providers ways to reduce consumption without sacrificing comfort.
Our society is moving towards an increasingly green electric future. Regardless if Quebec meets its ambitious environmental objectives, there are many simple and small acts we can take on the personal level to reduce our impact on the planet.
